Sleep medicine is a medical specialty or subspecialty devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of sleep disturbances and disorders. Some common sleep disorders include sleep apnea, insomnia and narcolepsy.
At Cross Timbers ENT, we help patients with various sleep conditions get back control of their rest each night. We serve patients in the Arlington, Mansfield, Dallas, and Fort Worth areas, providing diagnosis for the following conditions:
- Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Snoring is a condition that affects 45% of normal adults and can be a signal that something is seriously wrong with one’s breathing during sleep. Men are generally more likely to snore than premenopausal women; however, women who have gone through menopause are just as likely to snore as men. Children generally do not snore unless they have enlarged tonsils or adenoids.
OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA
Obstructive sleep apnea is one of the most common sleep disorders caused by a collapse of the airway while sleeping, resulting in repeated short periods of not breathing which further results in a lack of oxygen, causing numerous arousals of gasping for breath during the night. An estimated 18 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, and most are not diagnosed or evaluated. Left untreated, obstructive sleep apnea can be potentially fatal and can lead to heart failure, heart attacks/strokes, poorly controlled diabetes, reduced memory, daytime fatigue, depression and mood swings, poor productivity and harmful accidents, to name a few.
