How Balloon Sinuplasty Works

Chronic sinusitis usually occurs due to blocked sinuses or narrow sinus passageways. To open the sinuses back up and restore proper drainage, our doctors are able to perform a balloon sinuplasty that is much less invasive than traditional surgery. The FDA-cleared procedure uses a balloon catheter that is inserted into the sinuses. Once in the proper position, the balloon catheter is expanded to open the sinuses while still preserving your natural anatomy and preventing any cutting or removal of bone or tissue. During this procedure, the sinuses will also be flushed out to remove any pus or mucus that has built up from previous infections. The recovery time for balloon sinuplasty is much quicker than more invasive surgical procedures, with most people returning to normal activities a few days later.
